Bridging the Gap with Bridge Girls

Bridge Girls is no longer being run at The Bridge. There is now a monthly night called Bridge Girls LATE.

A new weekly night has popped up on the scene, aiming to bridge the gap so to speak!

Ok, so enough of the puns, and onto the juicy gossip. Just what is Bridge Girls and who goes?

Thursdays may never be the same again for the lesbians & bi women of South London with the introduction of this new night, hosted by The Bridge in Clapham (pretty much underneath Clapham High Street Overground station). The night is hosted by G4P and supported by Gay Lawyers and Diva Magazine.

The night features DJ Lucy Stone (aka BamBoTang) on the decks and an amazing drinks list including £5 cocktails!

Bridge Bar in Clapham is a nice bar with a mixture of comfy sofas, a couple of booths and some high chairs and tables – perfect for watching the crowd! An outdoor space with heaters means that this space is very flexible. The venue also boasts unisex toilets.

The crowd was not one that I’ve seen out in Soho recently; a varied mixture of professional mature lesbians alongside fans of DJ Lucy Stone’s sets.

If you love a good cocktail, I recommend you ask for Ellie. She works at The Bridge every Thursday, and she certainly knows how to shake up a good Cosmopolitan!

It is good to see a new night popping up in a new part of town. I’m actually quite surprised it has taken this long for Clapham to get its very own women's night given the number of gays in the village! 

Even for those in South East London, the night is accessible due to the overground link up. I got the train to Queens Road Peckham where my night bus sweeps past; and so it was easy to get home – although I only just made the last train!!

One Night in Soho

We headed out last Saturday night to the 3 Soho hotspots for women, and got our cocktail dance groove on.

Starting at She (23a Old Compton Street), we took advantage of our My Pocket Planet App loyalty card to get free entry (it's £2 otherwise) into an early evening vibe that got us in the mood.

With Saturday night guest DJ Missy B, there was plenty of vibe, a packed house and everything in place for a chilled, sophisticated night out.

On to Bar Titania, with its mixology cocktail specialist and the perfect venue to get the dance juices flowing before the late night mash. KC greets all with a friendly smile, and at the end of the night sends everyone on to their next dancefloor. 

With cheesy music and a pool table, is there a better way to unwind on a Saturday night or get in the mood for some late night booty shaking?


And finally, we ended up in Labels... it was the Findhrr V party and by the time we got there at 11 the party had really started. Awesome mixes from DJ Rachel Harvey kept the beat going and the dancefloor full all night long!

As well as delicious vegetarian dishes & cakes, for 3 nights during LGBT History Month the Gallery Cafe Stage is host to a fantastic theatrical event.

Hosted by Rainbow Hamlets as part of their new cultural programme, and of course in support of #LGBTHM, Rose Collis takes us on a biographical tour performance of 4 'trouser wearing characters'.

While the background roaring twenties jazz plays, take the opportunity to eat a delicious cake or sip a glass of wine. "Let's Misbehave" plays until Rose makes her dramatic entrance.

Drawing the audience in instantly with skilled story telling, cheeky songs, gender exploration and a comparison of attitudes of people then and now (striking similarities will startle), Rose weaves secrets, tidbits of biographical information & audience banter, and plays her banjele Bud as well.

Ideas of masculinity, femininity, male and female are brought to life through the real experiences of ground breaking performers and broadcasters, the forerunners who broke the mould and to whom we owe much for our current freedoms and acceptance (however far we still have to go). There are plenty of lessons from their bravery and it is very fitting we celebrate that during History month. 

Rose brings gems and nuggets of biographical details compellingly recounted through humour, song and wit.

Event review: Don't Miss MissFit

Venue: Stokey Stop, Stoke Newington High Street

This new weekly night from the women behind TLC, Unicorn and the upcoming Lesbian Prom offers a local, fun night for all women who want to dance the night away.

Bang in the middle of Stoke Newington High Street, the venue is ground floor and basement based, with a cool, modern urban feel to it. 

With toe-tapping, floor filling music, this event really starts to kick off at 11 as the women pour in. 

The music, supplied by DJ Sandra D and guests, was a lively, eclectic mix reminiscent of Popstarz in its old school days, guaranteed to fill the floor. 

Mostly under 25s, but a few of us in the older brackets too, there was a mix of women at the event and it definitely had a local feel to it, no wonder with the amount of LBQ women who live in the popular N16 locale. With no attitude or pretension present, it was easy to feel comfortable in the space and on the dance floor.

Hosts, Effi-Mai and Sandra chatted and mingled making everyone feel welcome. 

All in all, a great event that deserves to become established as a regular fixture on the calendar.
