Laughing Labia, A riot between the legs

Laughing Labia, A riot between the legs

Venue: Candy Bar
When: 3rd Wednesday of the month
Tickets: £8 available on the night

Launching its second season, Laughing Labia kicked off its opener in comedic style. This event is a platform for Women in Comedy and not just the usual suspects either. Also pleasing was the diverse and multicultural line up, which meant the five acts provided vastly different perspectives and comedy styles. The theme of the night was cultural differences and the humour that can be found in the space between two worlds.

Ably compered by Alice Frick, an Austrian Stand up who’s routine cleverly draws out the differences between Austria and the UK [insert basement jokes here], and has some neat observations about the English use of language as well as a very humorous take on coming out to grandmothers.

First comedian, Shelly Bridgman offered a political slant on the modern world, taking us through austerity to global warming, with punch lines that could also be contenders to solve the problems.

California Girl and self proclaimed Vagitarian Lauren Karl opened up the sauce can with a good old lively lesbian set, taking down the stereotypes of the world.

Bisha K Ali brought the pace down to a more mellow but slick level, with hilarious audience interplay, subtle deprecation of a Muslim upbringing.

Twerktastic Thanyia More, took the mood post watershed with her suggestive flirtatious jokes.

And for the final set, finger friendly Jenny Beake took us on a musical tour of sub culture, from The Fritzels in the style of Flintstones, to the Littlest IHobo and finally a Paul McCartney Yesterday perspective of divorcing Heather Mills which was at the sharp edge.

Political incorrectness, a bar in the room, 6 women who can hold their own on stage and against a particularly heckling crowd, gave great value for money for a midweek night out with the girls.
